Upper lip wrinkles are usually blamed on smoking, although the underlying cause is free radical damage. The sun, environmental toxins and smoke from cigarettes, along with advancing age, causes an increase in the number of free radical molecules within the skin. This is one of the causes of aging on a cellular level.
Just a few years ago, dermatological researchers found that older skin contains more free radicals and fewer antioxidants. The researchers concluded that this imbalance is the primary cause of all of the visible signs of aging; wrinkles, sagging, age spots, rough patches, etc.
Other factors are involved such as decreased collagen production, low levels of hyaluronic acid and inflammation. It’s just that researchers believe the free radical/antioxidant imbalance is mostly to blame. So, what do we do?
In addition to avoiding things that can increase the number of free radicals in the skin (overexposure to the sun, cigarette smoke, toxins in cosmetics), we can increase our antioxidant intake by eating more fruits and vegetables.
Some dietary supplements (including fish oil, lycopene, soy isoflavones and astaxanthin) have proven to be beneficial in studies. While none of the studies have looked specifically at upper lip wrinkles, the results seen have including increased firmness. When the skin is firmer, wrinkles are less deep.
The most impressive results have been seen in studies where antioxidants were applied directly to the skin. Coenzyme Q10 is particularly impressive.
COQ10 is one of the antioxidants naturally present in the skin. During sun exposure and other times of heightened free radical activity, the skin’s COQ10 levels decrease drastically, regardless of a person’s age.
It took some time for researchers to come up with a form of COQ10 that could penetrate through all of the skin’s layers. They finally created a nano-emulsion form.
If you have upper lip wrinkles, look for a cream containing the nano-emulsion form of coenzyme Q10 and other nourishing antioxidants; natural vitamin E for example. After three months of daily use, you should see a significant reduction in wrinkle depth. If the lines are fine, light and not too deep, they may disappear altogether.
